Roominate is Do-It-Yourself (DIY) colorful dollhouse aimed at teaching STEM concepts to girls. In addition to doll and dollhouse, it has added twist of wires, motors, batteries etc. that brings alive the dollhouse while teaching STEM concepts to girls.
Roominate is designed by two female engineers from MIT and Stanford with a mission to inspire the next generation of female technology innovators. Makers of Roominate were surprised to find that fewer women are entering college to major in STEM fields. They strongly believe that this is due to lack of early development of spatial skills, hands-on problem solving skills, and confidence with technology right from early age. Roominate aims to solve this by introducing girls to dollhouse toy that they will like to play and build stories around while teaching them hands-on problem solving, spatial and fine-motor skills, unleash imagination and creativity, introduce basic electronics, and help them build confidence with technology subjects as they grow.
As mentioned, Roominate is a DIY dollhouse. You build the walls and floor panels to create different rooms. It comes with modular building pieces that allows you to build additional components like staircases, beds, pool etc. or entire house on wheels. The interesting part starts with circuitry that comes with it. You can wire your entire dollhouse to build different components with lights and motors, such as spinning windmill, or elevators for multi-level dollhouse, lamps, washing machine and more. Rooms can be decorated with the included stickers, paper, as well as any craft supplies that you may have with you. This also encourages creativity and story telling.
In addition to walls, floor panels, furniture building pieces etc. it comes with wheels, axles, motor, lights, screwdriver, craft paper etc. Most of the Roominate toys are compatible with other toys from series of Roominate toys to have lots of building possibilities. Some of those possibilities include, Golden Gate Bridge, car wash with spinning brushes, or rocket ships.
You may want to consider buying Roominate Circuits Accessory Pack which includes lights, buzzer, battery packs etc. You can build additional lamps, alarm clocks, doorbells etc. with it.
Roominate comes in multiple options, primarily differing in components it has and hence number of different things you can build with it. Following are three popular options to consider.
